One of the most emblematic itineraries in the Sancy massif, 150 km long, between high plateaus (Artense) and glacial valleys (Chaudefour), at an altitude of over 1000 m, this route is sure to delight sports enthusiasts!

Also on the route: La Tour-d’Auvergne, Lac d’en Haut and Lac d’en Bas on the Sagnes de La Godivelle National Nature Reserve, the medieval town of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise, Murol and its castle, Lac Chambon and the spa town of Le Mont-Dore.

Le Mont-Dore Tourist Office is housed in the sports and leisure complex (skating rink, bowling alley, conference room) in the spa park in the town center. Easy pedestrian access from downtown through the spa park.
Car access, easy parking from avenue de la Libération.
Disabled access: from avenue de la Libération, follow the signs to the disabled parking area inside the park.

Étape 1 : Towards the Artense (km 0 to 46).Leaving Le Mont-Dore heading west. Pass through Domaine de la Stèle (km 10) and cross the Artense plateau via Saint-Donat and Saint-Genès-Champespe to Égliseneuve-d’Entraigues.

Étape 2 : Incursion into Cantal and the Lakes (km 46 to 72).The route descends south to the edge of the Cantal (Marcenat). Enjoy a view of the Monts du Cantal (km 55) before climbing back up to the village of Montgreleix. Highlight: the crossing of the Réserve Naturelle des Sagnes with the Lacs d’en Haut and d’en Bas at La Godivelle.

Étape 3 : Descent to Valbeleix and ascent to Besse (km 72 to 104).Head east towards Compains, then a plunge towards the village of Valbeleix (km 93). This is followed by a gradual ascent to the medieval town of Besse-et-Saint-Anastaise.

Étape 4 : Château de Murol and Lac Chambon (km 104 to 130).Head northeast towards Saint-Victor-la-Rivière, with an unobstructed view of the Chaîne des Puys. You then reach Château de Murol (km 124) and follow the shores of Lac Chambon.

Étape 5 : The grand finale: Chaudefour valley and Croix Saint-Robert pass (km 130 to 151).The hardest part begins here: the climb up the Chaudefour valley (km 136) followed by the major ascent to the Col de la Croix Saint-Robert (1,451 m). Once over the pass, all that remains is to plunge downhill towards the finish at Le Mont-Dore.
