Saint-Victor-La-Rivière offers you a calm trip into the wild without depriving leisure. It is located between Chambon Lake in summer and Super-Besse in winter. And for heritage lovers you will be more than satisfied.
The municipality is composed by 9 hamlets scattered over 1900 hectares: Jassat, Bessolles, Le Breuil, Courbanges, Rocheromaine, Maisse, Chatelguizon, Chomeilles and Le Verdier. Saint-Victore-la-Rivière certainly owns its name to the Auvergnat dialect “ribeyre” that means humid land and it is the case with its surrounding valleys.
A small but varied heritage is present all over the municipality. Through hikes you will discover bread ovens, launderettes, fountains, troughs, crosses, cheese cellars, precious witnesses of social practices and the economic, religious and farming life.
Located in a market town, the church was built on a basalt rock during the 12th century and modified during the 15th and the 16th centuries. The squared bell tower with its arrow at the top dates from the 19th century. We can notice above the gate, the Murol family’s coat of arms. The building is listed as Historical Monuments since October, 13th of 1962.
Near Bessoles hamlet, you can stop to the rock of Roche Romaine, rocks blocks from a volcanic basalt flow that dates from the Miocene area, around 10 million years. It was probably a shelter during the Gallo-Roman area.
The view is amazing !
